Upgrade Your RV Comfort: Installing a Honeywell Programmable Thermostat

If you're still using the original analog thermostat in your RV, you might be missing out on improved efficiency and better temperature control. I recently upgraded my RV's old Dometic thermostat to a Honeywell Home RTH8560D1002 Programmable Thermostat, and the difference has been incredible. In this post, I’ll walk you through the benefits of this upgrade, the installation process, and why this thermostat is a great choice for RVers.

Why Upgrade to a Programmable Thermostat?

Many RVs come equipped with basic analog thermostats, which can be inaccurate and lack the precision needed for comfortable climate control. A programmable thermostat allows you to set temperature schedules, making it easier to maintain a consistent and comfortable environment in your RV while also improving energy efficiency.

Benefits of the Honeywell Home RTH8560D1002

✔️ Precise Temperature Control – No more guessing! The digital display ensures you get the exact temperature you set. ✔️ Programmable Settings – Set heating and cooling schedules to match your daily routine. ✔️ Touchscreen Interface – Easy-to-read, user-friendly display. ✔️ Battery Backup – Keeps your settings intact during power fluctuations. ✔️ Sleek, Modern Design – A big visual upgrade from outdated analog thermostats.

Step-by-Step Installation

Installing a new thermostat might seem daunting, but with the right approach, it’s a simple DIY project. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Turn Off Power – Always disconnect the power to your thermostat before working on electrical components.

  2. Remove the Old Thermostat – Unscrew and carefully disconnect the wiring, taking note of the color-coded wires.

  3. Install the New Base Plate – Secure the Honeywell thermostat’s mounting plate to the wall.

  4. Connect the Wires – Match the corresponding wires to the correct terminals on the new thermostat.

  5. Attach the Thermostat Unit – Snap the unit into place and ensure it's secure.

  6. Power It On & Program Settings – Restore power and set your preferred temperature schedule.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading to a Honeywell programmable thermostat is one of the best modifications you can make to improve comfort and efficiency in your RV. Whether you’re a weekend camper or a full-time RVer like me, having precise control over your heating and cooling makes a big difference.
